Hyundai Motor Group marks six years under Chung as it pursues AI shift
Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun reaches six years in the role on October 14.
Since 2022, the group has ranked third in global vehicle sales, behind Toyota and Volkswagen, and kept that position through last year.
It has expanded electric and hybrid vehicle sales and is now aiming to become a provider of physical AI solutions, including robotics, autonomous driving and AI-powered factories.
The group plans to invest 125.2 trillion won in South Korea over five years and 9 trillion won in an AI and robotics hub in Saemangeum by 2029.
It is also investing in the United States and working with technology companies including Nvidia and Waymo.
The shift matters because it could change how the group makes vehicles and broaden its business beyond traditional car manufacturing.
Labor relations remain a challenge: Hyundai Motor workers went on a full strike this year after wage talks stalled, and the group still needs to turn its AI ambitions into business results.
Hyundai Motor Group has retained its position as the world’s third-largest automaker by sales for four consecutive years since reaching the top three in 2022.
Chair Chung Eui-sun marks six years as group chair on Oct. 14.
