Delhi detains 7,000 as security operation blocks planned CJP protest
Delhi deployed about 41,000 security personnel to stop a planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party, or CJP, at Jantar Mantar.
The protest called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.
The security operation led to 7,000 people being detained and left large parts of the city deserted.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the city would not be held hostage and accused the CJP of acting as an AAP ally.
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate criticised Gupta and questioned her response to the alleged mistreatment of women protesters.
The CJP said it would continue protesting until Kumar resigns.
It announced another demonstration at Jantar Mantar for 10 am on Sunday.
