SCCL's First Coal Consignment From Odisha Mine Reaches Telangana
Singareni Collieries is a company that digs coal out of the ground, and that coal helps make electricity.
This week, the company did something it had never done before.
It mined coal in a state called Odisha and sent it all the way to another state called Telangana.
The coal travelled about 1,131 kilometres on a train with 59 wagons.
The train carried about 4,000 tonnes of coal.
This was a big deal because it was the first time coal from the company's own mine outside Telangana reached the state.
The coal will be used to make electricity for the people of Telangana.
The Deputy Chief Minister sent a video message from the United States to congratulate the workers, and he said the government wants the company to grow and maybe dig for special minerals in the future.
The company's leaders held a small ceremony to welcome the train, and a new, bigger power unit is being built at the power plant.
The first railway rake carrying coal from SCCL's Naini coal mine in Odisha reached the Singareni Thermal Power Plant (STPP) at Jaipur in Mancherial district, Telangana, on Thursday.
The consignment of about 4,000 tonnes of G-10 grade coal in 59 BOXN wagons travelled nearly 1,131 kilometres from the Hindol railway siding—the first time coal from an SCCL-operated mine outside Telangana reached the state.
Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, on an official visit to the United States, called the development a 'historic occasion' and outlined plans for SCCL to expand and diversify into critical minerals.
The Naini coal block, allotted to SCCL by the Union coal ministry on August 13, 2015, has estimated reserves of 340.78 million tonnes and a planned production capacity of 10 million tonnes annually for 36 years, though it was stalled for nearly nine years due to pending clearances.
Coal production at Naini was virtually inaugurated on April 16, 2025, after Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy facilitated forest clearances, and a new 800-MW ultra-supercritical unit at STPP is under construction.
