Delhi Plants 100,000 Trees in Massive Ridge Drive
Delhi’s government planted more than 100,000 trees in one day to help the city’s forests grow again.
The Lieutenant Governor, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, led the effort at Kamla Nehru Ridge and asked students and residents to keep planting trees.
They used native plants that are good for the local climate.
The government wants to make tree‑planting a regular thing and keep the trees alive.
This is part of a big plan to plant 70 lakh trees across Delhi, started by the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah.
Delhi Development Authority planted over 100,000 native trees and shrubs across 77 sites in a single‑day drive on July 31, 2024.
Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu led the drive at Kamla Nehru Ridge and called for a youth‑led, people’s movement to restore Delhi’s ridge forests.
The drive used indigenous species such as Peepal, Neem, Jamun, Shisham, and others chosen for ecological resilience.
Sandhu directed the DDA to appoint nodal officers for each site to ensure sapling survival and to make such drives a regular practice across all ridges.
The plantation effort is part of the 70‑lakh‑sapling “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” mission launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with a target of 1.81 lakh trees for the ridge area this season.
