Centre and State Pass Buck Over Moong Procurement
Farmers in Madhya Pradesh want the government to buy all the moong they grow.
The state can only buy a small part because of rules from the central government.
The state’s minister has written to the central minister many times asking for a bigger share.
The central government wants the state to buy 4.55 lakh tonnes, but the state says it could grow 20 lakh tonnes and wants to buy 8.06 lakh tonnes.
The state has only met 2% of the central target so far, so both sides blame each other and the farmers are upset.
Farmers in Madhya Pradesh demand 100% moong procurement since July 1.
State limits procurement to 25% of produce, 40 quintals per day, per central guidelines.
State Agriculture Minister Aidal Singh Kanshana has written to central counterpart Shivraj Singh Chouhan three times requesting higher procurement target.
