Ghatkopar Landslide Kills Shaikh Family Days After Moving
Mumbai is a very big city in India, and it was raining a lot there.
During the night, part of a hill fell down in a place called Ghatkopar.
The falling rocks and mud covered small houses where people were sleeping.
A family named Shaikh had just moved to Mumbai three days before.
Sadly, the father, the mother, and their two children were killed.
Another young man named Rahul also died that night.
It was his birthday, and he was working on his computer using a neighbor's internet connection.
People nearby heard a very loud sound, like a bomb going off, and ran out to help.
A big rock was stopped by a tree, which may have prevented even more damage.
The Shaikh family's relatives wanted to take the bodies back to their hometown to say goodbye.
A landslide struck the hillside above Ashok Nagar in Ghatkopar West, Mumbai, in the early hours of Wednesday, burying several homes under debris.
Four members of the Shaikh family — Arif Shaikh, his wife Marjina, and children Mannat and Aban — were killed just three days after moving to Mumbai.
Another victim, Viket alias Rahul Yadav, died on his birthday while working from the affected house because his new home had no Wi-Fi connection.
Residents of the settlement, home to around 1,000 people, said they heard a sound like a bomb blast at around 3:30 am and rushed to help with rescue efforts.
A large boulder was stopped by a peepal tree behind the affected house, and relatives requested that the bodies be taken to Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, for last rites.
