BMC Chief Orders Removal of Illegal Hawkers, Footpath Encroachments

The city of Mumbai has a plan called 'Pedestrian First' to make sidewalks safe and clear for people walking.

The person in charge, Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, went out to check how the work was going.

She looked at roads in a neighbourhood called Vile Parle.

She told officials to remove things blocking the sidewalks, like street sellers' carts and other obstacles.

This matters because patients, ambulances and college students often use the path near Cooper Hospital.

The city wants to make 320 kilometres of sidewalks completely free of obstacles.

In one ward alone, workers will clear sidewalks on 27 roads.

They will also improve and beautify the walking spaces with safety measures.

Earlier, she asked officials across all wards to clear sidewalks near schools, hospitals, train and metro stations, bus stops and markets.

The goal is to make walking easier and safer for everyone.
