Cabinet Approves ₹8,970-Crore Guwahati-Tezpur Highway Project in Assam
The government of India has approved a big new highway project in the state of Assam.
The highway will connect two cities, Guwahati and Tezpur.
It will be about 136 kilometres long and have four lanes.
Building it will cost about 8,970 crore rupees.
Drivers will pay a toll to help pay for the road.
Builders will make many bridges, flyovers, and underpasses so traffic can move smoothly.
There will also be a special flat stretch of road where planes can land in an emergency.
The new road should make travel twice as fast, cutting trip time in half.
It will help people reach places like Kaziranga National Park and the Kamakhya Temple more easily.
The project is meant to make driving safer and help the whole region grow.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the 135.871 km, four-lane access-controlled Guwahati-Tezpur Corridor of NH-15 in Assam.
The project involves a total investment of ₹8,970.20 crore and will be developed on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) toll mode.
It includes five major bypasses spanning 58.7 km, plus 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers, 46 underpasses, one elephant underpass and 210 km of service roads (one article omits the service roads and lists the flyovers twice).
A 4.9 km Emergency Landing Facility will be built on the Tezpur Bypass, finalised in coordination with the Indian Air Force, to decongest NH-27 on the south side of the Brahmaputra River.
The corridor is expected to double average travel speeds, halve travel time, and improve connectivity to eight PM Gati Shakti economic nodes, two aspirational districts, three tourist nodes and seven logistics nodes across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
