Gujarat Foodgrain Scheme Families Triple to Nearly 40 Lakh

Gujarat gives food to eligible families through a government food security scheme.

The number of families receiving help grew from about 3 lakh to more than 9 lakh in four years.

The number of people receiving food increased to nearly 40 lakh.

The scheme provides items such as wheat, rice, sugar, cooking oil, gram and coarse grains.

Some items are free, while others are offered at lower prices.

However, the total amount of wheat and rice given out became smaller.

Government spending on those two grains also fell.

The government did not explain why the distribution and spending declined.
