Assam vows long-term protection for riverbank communities after erosion
The Brahmaputra is a very big and strong river.
Sometimes it washes away the soil on its banks, and this is called erosion.
A part of a protective wall called an embankment got badly damaged by erosion.
Cracks also appeared in other parts of the wall.
This happened in a place called Assam in India.
The Finance Minister of Assam, Jayanta Mallabaruah, went to see the damage.
He said the government will make a plan to keep people who live near the river safe for a long time.
Workers used sand-filled bags and soil to protect the weak spots.
The minister also asked experts to find strong, permanent solutions to stop the river from damaging the land.
Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah inspected the erosion-hit Jamuguri area in Lakhimpur district on Wednesday.
The visit was made on the directions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Severe erosion damaged a portion of the Latabari embankment late Tuesday night, with cracks on adjoining stretches due to the Brahmaputra's strong current.
Officials, the district administration and residents worked overnight using geo-bags, sand-filled bags and earth to stabilize vulnerable sections.
Mallabaruah directed a detailed technical survey and a project estimate for permanent embankment restoration, including geo-bag reinforcement and other engineering solutions.
