Tamil Nadu CM Vijay seeks permanent 543 Lok Sabha strength
The leader of Tamil Nadu, Mr. C Joseph Vijay, wrote a letter to Mr. Modi, the Prime Minister of India.
India is a very big country that divides itself into voting areas for elections.
This dividing is called delimitation.
Mr. Vijay asked that the number of people in the Lok Sabha, part of India's Parliament, stay at 543 forever.
He is worried that states in the south of India will lose some of their representatives.
He said this happened before, in 1967, when Tamil Nadu lost two members of Parliament.
He asked the Prime Minister to look at a resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly on August 12.
The resolution also asks that women get one-third of the seats in Parliament and state assemblies.
Mr. Vijay believes Southern States worked hard on population control, health, and public welfare, so they should not be punished.
There has been no word yet on whether the Prime Minister will agree.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday requesting Constitutional amendments related to delimitation.
Vijay asked for the Lok Sabha's total strength to be made permanent at 543 members and for the existing number of seats allocated to States to be frozen at current levels.
The letter drew Modi's attention to the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly on August 12 on the proposed delimitation.
Vijay warned that Southern States might lose significant Parliamentary seats under population-based delimitation, recalling that Tamil Nadu's MP count was reduced from 41 to 39 in 1967.
The Assembly resolution also urged the Union Government to implement 33% women's reservation in Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections based on the existing 543 strength.
