DMK backs TVK resolution against delimitation linked to women's quota

The state government of Tamil Nadu passed a special request, called a resolution, telling India's national government to keep the number of seats in Parliament exactly the same at 543.

They worry that if seats are divided again based on a new count of people, called a census, states in the south that kept their populations small would lose seats.

The request also says women should get one-third of Parliament's seats in the 2029 elections, but using the current 543 seats.

Tamil Nadu's leader, Vijay, said giving women seats is a right and a matter of fairness, not a gift.

The main opposition party, the DMK, agreed and supported the request, even though it often fights with the ruling party.

Some other parties, like the AIADMK, BJP, and PMK, disagreed with the part about keeping the seats the same.

They said they do support giving women more seats, but they think the state government made this request too quickly for political reasons.

The national home minister, Amit Shah, said states will not lose any seats even after a new count.

So, different parties disagree about how to count people and share seats, but most agree women should have more seats in Parliament.
