BMC Tree Authority to Decide Felling of 35 Ghatkopar Trees
In Mumbai, a city in India, some important people who take care of the city are thinking about a plan.
The plan is to build new homes and buildings in a neighborhood called Ghatkopar.
To build there, some trees on the land will need to be cut down or moved.
Right now there are 90 trees on the land.
The plan says 35 trees will be cut down and 11 trees will be moved to new places.
Some of the trees, like peepal and coconut trees, might be very old.
To help nature, the people planning the project have promised to plant 955 new trees in the same area.
The new trees will be planted within 15 days and looked after for seven years.
Before saying yes, the city officials asked local people what they thought.
This way, the city is trying to build new things while also taking care of trees.
The BMC Tree Authority is scheduled to take up a proposal on Friday to fell 35 trees and transplant 11 for the Ramabai and Kamraj Nagar SRA redevelopment project in Ghatkopar East.
A survey of the site at Ghatkopar Village No. 194/B (Part) found 90 trees, of which 46 would be affected by excavation and construction, while 44 would be retained.
Trees proposed for removal include peepal, coconut, rain tree, almond and vilayati chich, many estimated to be 15–30 years old with circumferences of up to eight feet.
MMRDA has committed to planting 955 local-species trees, each at least six feet tall, on the same site within 15 days, with a seven-year maintenance commitment.
The proposal is being examined under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975; the BMC invited public objections in February and placed notices on the trees.
