Mumbai Metro Line 6 May Begin Services With Temporary Vikhroli Facility
Mumbai is building a new train line called Metro Line 6.
It will connect Swami Samarth Nagar with Vikhroli across the city.
The line may start carrying passengers before its main maintenance depot is finished.
To keep the trains checked and safe, officials plan to build a smaller elevated facility called a pit line at Vikhroli.
The pit line can help workers inspect and repair parts underneath the trains.
The full depot is planned on salt-pan land in Kanjurmarg.
Approval is still needed for changes to the land transfer plan.
The line will have 13 stations and connect with several other Metro lines.
Officials expect it to reduce travel time between Andheri and the Eastern Express Highway by 30 to 45 minutes.
MMRDA may begin Metro Line 6 services before its full-fledged car shed is completed.
An elevated pit-line facility at Vikhroli is planned for routine inspections and rake maintenance.
The 15.31-kilometre, fully elevated corridor will connect Swami Samarth Nagar and Vikhroli.
The line will have 13 stations and interchanges with Metro Lines 2A, 7, 3 and 4.
Depot construction depends on approval to reallocate 197.4 acres of salt-pan land linked to the Dharavi redevelopment project.
