India's Truck Market Defies Odds; Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland Deliver
Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland are two big Indian companies that make trucks and buses.
They just told everyone how many vehicles they sold and how much money they made in the last three months.
Both companies sold many more trucks and buses than they did a year ago.
Tata Motors sold about 108,700 commercial vehicles, which is almost 26% more than before.
Ashok Leyland sold 48,763 vehicles, its best ever for the first quarter of a financial year.
The companies made more money too, but their profits grew slowly because steel and copper became more expensive.
The Indian government also helped by lowering a tax called GST on trucks and buses from 28% to 18%.
Tata Motors is also buying a truck-making company from Italy called Iveco.
People watch truck sales closely because trucks carry food, cement and other important goods, so strong sales mean the economy is doing well.
Tata Motors' commercial vehicle sales grew nearly 26% year-on-year to 108,700 units in Q1 FY27, lifting its domestic market share to 36.8%.
Ashok Leyland posted record Q1 commercial vehicle sales of 48,763 units and record standalone revenue of Rs 9,634 crore, up 10.4% year-on-year.
Both makers saw operating margins slip on higher steel and copper costs, with Tata Motors at 10.2% and Ashok Leyland at 10%.
GST on trucks, buses and commercial vehicles was cut to 18% from 28% from 22 September 2025, supporting demand.
Tata Motors expects final regulatory approval for its ~€3.8 billion acquisition of Iveco's commercial vehicle business by end of August 2026.
