India’s Electric Car Sales Cross 2-Lakh Mark in Eight Months
People in India bought more electric cars in the first eight months of 2026 than they bought during all of 2025.
More than 212,000 electric passenger vehicles were registered.
Electric cars made up 6.2% of all passenger vehicle registrations during this period.
This share was 4.3% for the whole of 2025.
Tata Motors sold the most electric cars, followed by Mahindra Electric and JSW MG Motor India.
Many companies are now offering electric models at different prices and in different vehicle types.
This gives buyers more choices than before.
Higher fuel prices and concerns about E20 petrol may also be encouraging interest in electric cars.
However, charging stations, purchase prices and vehicle choices will affect how quickly sales continue to grow.
India registered 212,191 electric passenger vehicles between January and August 2026.
The eight-month total was 8.4% higher than full-year 2025 registrations.
Electric vehicles accounted for 6.2% of passenger vehicle registrations, up from 4.3% in 2025.
Tata Motors led the market with 83,254 registrations and a 39.2% share.
Industry executives cited wider model availability, fuel prices and consumer concerns about E20 petrol as adoption factors.
