EV Sales Double Hybrids in India's First Half of 2026
Why EVs are leaving hybrid cars in the dust · financialexpress.com

Electric cars run only on electricity stored in a battery, while hybrid cars also use a small petrol engine.

In the first half of 2026, electric car sales in India were almost double hybrid car sales.

Hybrid sales stayed about the same as last year, at nearly 58,000 cars.

Electric car sales were much higher, with the top ten models alone selling over 116,000 cars.

One reason is that there are many more electric car models to choose from — more than 25 versus just eight hybrids.

Another reason is that electric cars are cheaper, because they are taxed much less than hybrids.

The most popular electric car was the MG Windsor, and the most popular hybrid was Toyota's Innova Hycross.

Many companies plan to launch new hybrids soon, including Kia, whose Sorento hybrid arrives in September.

Experts say more choices and lower prices mean car buyers are the real winners.

That is why electric cars are leaving hybrids behind for now.
