Indian envoy leads 80th Independence Day celebration in Singapore
Long ago, on August 15, 1947, India became a free country.
Every year Indians celebrate that day, and so did Indians living in Singapore.
The Indian High Commissioner, Shilpak Ambule, raised the Indian flag at a big gathering.
More than 2,500 people came to sing songs and watch dances by Indian school students.
Everyone ate sweets and Indian food to make it a happy party.
The day was also about remembering brave Indian soldiers from World War II.
Many Indian soldiers fought and died in Singapore, and their names are written on a big memorial called Kranji.
A wreath was placed there to honour them.
Some women also talked about India's beautiful handwoven clothes.
So the celebration was about joy, culture, and remembering history.
Indian High Commissioner to Singapore Shilpak Ambule hoisted the tricolour at India's 80th Independence Day celebrations, attended by more than 2,500 diaspora members.
The flag-hosting ceremony at the Chancery included the National Anthem, Vande Mataram, patriotic songs, and excerpts from President Droupadi Murmu's address.
Ambule laid a wreath at the Kranji War Cemetery and Memorial, where over 12,500 Indian soldiers are among the 24,000 fallen Allied soldiers inscribed on the walls.
Ambule noted that more than 67,000 of the 139,000 Allied Forces personnel deployed to fight in Malaya and Singapore during WWII were Indians.
Women from the diaspora promoted India's handloom and textile heritage through the 'Sari Circle' community initiative led by Divya Dhar.
