Vice-President pays tributes to freedom fighters on 80th Independence Day
The Vice President of India wrote a special message for India's 80th Independence Day.
Independence Day is the day India celebrates becoming a free country many years ago.
He said thank you to all the brave men and women who fought for India's freedom.
He visited faraway islands called the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where he raised the Indian flag.
He also visited an old prison called the Cellular Jail, where many freedom fighters were kept.
He remembered leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, who started a big movement with the words 'Do or Die,' and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, whose soldiers raised the Indian flag in 1943.
He told the story of a young hero named Tiruppur Kumaran, who held the flag even when he was hurt and died when he was only 27 years old.
The Vice President said we should remember all these heroes.
He also asked everyone to work together to make India a great country by the year 2047.
Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan extended heartiest congratulations to all Bharatvasi on the 80th Independence Day celebrations of Bharat and paid tributes to freedom fighters.
He hoisted the national flag and launched the Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign in the Andaman Islands on August 9, as the nation commemorated the Quit India Movement.
He commemorated the first hoisting of the Tiranga on Indian territory by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Azad Hind Fauj on December 30, 1943.
He paid homage to Tiruppur Kumaran, who died at age 27 on January 10, 1932, during the Civil Disobedience Movement while holding the national flag.
He commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing unsung heroes of the national movement to centre stage and urged dedication to building Viksit Bharat @ 2047.
