Heavy Rain Floods Kolkata as Bengal Faces More Downpours

A weather system brought very heavy rain to Kolkata and many parts of West Bengal.

Streets and low-lying areas filled with water, making travel and daily activities difficult.

Alipore in Kolkata received 127 millimetres of rain in one day.

Sriniketan received even more, with 263 millimetres recorded.

Water also collected in parts of Bolpur and near Santiniketan.

Weather officials said more rain could fall over the next two days.

Some northern districts may receive extremely heavy rain.

Rain in southern Bengal should become weaker from Thursday, but showers may continue until September 8.

Wind forecast: Gusty winds of 30 to 40 km per hour were expected in south Bengal on Wednesday.
Other rainfall totals: Asansol recorded 110 mm, Tilpara Barrage 80 mm, Bankura 60 mm, Kalimpong 70 mm and Darjeeling 37 mm.
