India must become self-reliant, Modi says on Independence Day
On August 15, India celebrates Independence Day, the day the country became free a long time ago.
This year was the 80th Independence Day celebration.
The leader of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made a special speech.
He spoke from a famous old fort called the Red Fort in New Delhi.
Before speaking, he raised the Indian national flag.
He told the people of India that the country should become self-reliant.
That means making and doing things by ourselves instead of depending on other countries.
He said buying cheap things from other countries does not make India stronger.
Instead, India should practice and build its own skills.
He talked about a plan called Make in India, which encourages making things in India.
PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort after hoisting the national flag on the 80th Independence Day.
Modi said India must move towards self-reliance and not remain dependent on other countries.
He argued that cheaper, readily available foreign goods do not build or test India's capabilities.
Modi said India must strengthen its own capabilities and ensure the responsibility of protecting its national interests rests with the country.
He cited government initiatives such as Make in India while making his case for self-reliance.
