Rising Input Costs Push Kovilpatti Peanut Candy Prices Up
Kovilpatti peanut candy now costs more than before.
The price increased from Rs.
220 to Rs.
270 for one kilogram.
Candy makers say the increase was needed because their ingredients and packaging became more expensive.
Groundnuts now cost more, and jaggery costs twice as much as it did three months earlier.
Cardamom has also become more expensive.
The new price started on August 25.
The candy is strongly connected with Kovilpatti and is sold in India and other countries.
It received a Geographical Indication tag in 2020.
Manufacturers want the government to help the candy reach more customers.
Kovilpatti peanut candy prices rose 23%, from Rs. 220 to Rs. 270 per kilogram.
The Kovilpatti manufacturers and sellers association approved the increase at a meeting in Kovilpatti.
The revised price took effect on August 25.
Groundnut, jaggery, cardamom and packaging costs have all increased sharply.
Manufacturers want the candy included in Tamil Nadu’s noon meal scheme and sold on Vande Bharat trains.
