Maharashtra’s food-safety department inspected several places that prepare or sell food in Mumbai.

It suspended the licence of a mess at Nair Hospital that makes food for about 400 nurses.

The department said the mess had serious safety and cleanliness problems.

The hospital’s dean said the mess was already closed after lunch when inspectors visited and that the hospital had not yet received the inspection report.

The FDA also suspended the licence of Olympia Coffee House in Colaba.

Inspectors reportedly found a urinal near stored food, insects, dirty equipment and other hygiene problems there.

Licences of several other food businesses were also suspended.

The FDA said the action was part of an ongoing campaign to enforce food-safety rules during the festive season.
