Maharashtra FDA Suspends Radio Club, McDonald’s Licences Over Hygiene
Maharashtra’s food safety department inspected many restaurants and hotels.
It said that some places were not following important hygiene rules.
Inspectors found flies and cockroaches in the Bombay Presidency Radio Club’s kitchen.
They also found food and cleaning chemicals stored in unsafe ways.
A McDonald’s kiosk in Colaba still had many problems during a follow-up inspection.
Status Restaurant and Khar Gymkhana were also suspended over reported hygiene issues.
The department inspected 89 establishments and gave notices to many of them.
Restaurants with suspended licences were told to stop handling and selling food during the suspension.
The Maharashtra FDA inspected 89 hotels, restaurants and dhabas across the state on August 19 and 20, issuing improvement notices to 71 establishments and suspending 13 licences.
The Bombay Presidency Radio Club in Colaba had live flies, dead cockroaches, peeling plaster, chemicals stored near food and food kept on the floor, according to inspectors.
A Colaba McDonald’s kiosk allegedly failed to correct 18 of 20 deficiencies identified in an earlier notice, including pest-control, refrigeration and food-handling problems.
Status Restaurant, Khar Gymkhana and four other Mumbai establishments also faced licence or registration suspensions over reported hygiene and food-safety violations.
The FDA said suspended establishments must stop relevant food purchases, production, sales and distribution until the suspension is lifted.
