Former TMC MLA Named in FIR Over Doctor's Hurried Cremation
A doctor who worked at a big hospital in Kolkata, India, was hurt very badly one night and died.
Police found out she had been attacked, and a man was later convicted for that crime and sent to prison for life.
After she died, her body was cremated in a ceremony.
Her father is upset because he says the family was not asked for permission and the cremation happened much too quickly.
He believes it was rushed so the body could not be checked again for more proof.
Because of this, the police have filed a formal complaint, called an FIR, against three people.
One of them used to be a lawmaker, and another worked for the local town council.
Police also noticed that the papers for the cremation were signed by neighbours instead of the family.
A separate team of investigators is still looking into the hospital and the evidence in the case, and now the courts will decide what happened.
An FIR was registered at Khardah police station against former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh, Panihati Municipality councillor Somnath Dey and neighbour Sanjeev Mukherjee over the alleged hurried cremation of the RG Kar rape-murder victim.
The complaint by the victim's father alleges the body was cremated in undue haste without family consent, allegedly to prevent a second autopsy and conceal evidence.
The fresh case is separate from the CBI's court-monitored probe into the rape and murder, which was transferred from the Kolkata Police; Sanjoy Roy was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2025.
Suvendu Adhikari directed police on August 8 to register a separate case, citing an alleged waiver of cremation fees and missing signatures of the victim's family members.
Police said the body was cremated at a crematorium in Panihati, allegedly overtaking two other bodies in queue, with consent documents allegedly signed by neighbours.
