Adhikari praises Barrackpore police chief over RG Kar case arrests
In Kolkata, a big city in India, a young doctor who was training at a hospital was hurt very badly and died in 2024.
After that, some people were accused of hurrying to burn her body before it could be examined properly.
The police have been looking for the people responsible, and they caught a man named Nirmal Ghosh who used to be an elected leader.
He was hiding in a town called Balasore in Odisha, but the police found him and arrested him.
He is accused of helping to destroy evidence and of pressuring the doctor's family.
The doctor's father said the accused people came to his house and pushed the family to cremate the body quickly.
A police officer in Barrackpore was praised for making these arrests.
Three senior police officers were suspended and some doctors lost their medical registration because of the case.
The police say more people may be arrested soon.
Suvendu Adhikari praised the Barrackpore police commissioner for arresting two people, including former Panihati TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh, in the alleged 'cremation scam' linked to the RG Kar doctor's rape and murder.
Ghosh was arrested from a hideout at Balasore in Odisha on Thursday, and Adhikari said the other absconding accused will be arrested soon.
Ghosh faces charges of destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy, and forcing someone to carry out an act against their will.
The victim's father alleged the accused pressured his family to quickly take the body to the crematorium; Ghosh had allegedly met then principal Sandip Ghosh and accompanied the hearse.
Adhikari said three IPS officers were suspended and medical council registrations were cancelled, and alleged the TMC government had protected police officers suspected in the case.
