Torrential Rains in Himachal Block Roads; Orange Alert in Districts
Sometimes in the summer, very heavy rain falls for many days, and this is called the monsoon.
In a place called Himachal Pradesh, the rain was so strong that it blocked more than one hundred roads.
When roads are blocked, people cannot travel easily to get food or help.
The weather experts told people in several districts to be careful.
They said there could be very heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday.
Some towns, like Dharamshala, got a lot of rain.
The rain also stopped water and electricity from working in many areas.
In one place, a tree fell on a building, but luckily the families inside were safe.
Since the rainy season started, sadly 79 people have died in rain-related accidents.
The heavy rain also caused a lot of damage, costing the state almost a thousand crore rupees.
Torrential monsoon rains have blocked between 109 and 118 roads across Himachal Pradesh, with the two reports giving differing counts.
The meteorological office issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in four to five districts for August 17-18 (Monday and Tuesday).
Dharamshala recorded 96.2 mm (one report says 126.3 mm) of rainfall in 24 hours, followed by Palampur at 55 mm and Kangra at 34.6 mm.
The rains disrupted 216 water supply schemes/lines and 7 to 19 power transformers; in Thakurdwara near Palampur, a tree fell on a building, giving two families a narrow escape.
Since the monsoon onset on June 30, 79 people have died in rain-related incidents (14 in landslides, one in a flash flood), and state losses are estimated at Rs 972-973 crore.
