The National Green Tribunal is a court that deals with environmental problems.

It said waste was being dumped illegally in parts of Thane district, including mangrove areas.

The tribunal had earlier told officials to stop construction waste from being dumped.

It found that the Thane District Collector had not followed that direction or filed a required reply.

The tribunal ordered the Collector to pay ₹1 lakh.

The Collector must also explain within two weeks what steps have been taken.

Thane Municipal Corporation said it had cleared waste at several sites and installed barriers.
