NGT Seeks Fresh Data on Waste at Delhi's Singhola Site
The National Green Tribunal is a special court in India that works to protect nature and the environment.
It asked the city government of Delhi, called the MCD, to say exactly how much garbage is piled up at a place named Singhola.
The city government had earlier not shared that number with the court.
The court also looked at another place, the Narela-Bawana site.
There, the city government said there is no raw garbage left, only a material called RDF.
RDF is trash that has been turned into a kind of fuel that can be burned to make energy.
About 34,313 tonnes of old RDF were found at that landfill, and close to 9,654 tonnes had already been removed by March 2026.
The rest is still being processed and removed in stages.
The city government also said work to build a waste-processing facility at Singhola will start in November 2026.
The court wants a new update at least one week before the next hearing, so it knows exactly how much waste is really there.
The National Green Tribunal directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to disclose the exact quantity of waste accumulated at the Singhola dump site.
The tribunal noted that the MCD's previous submissions remained silent on the amount of waste or RDF at Singhola.
For the Narela-Bawana site, the MCD said no untreated municipal solid waste is lying there and the material consists only of Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF).
Of approximately 34,313 metric tonnes of legacy RDF retrieved from the landfill, 9,654.50 MT had been disposed of by March 2026.
The MCD said the Singhola processing facility will start from November 2026, and it must file a fresh progress report at least one week before the next hearing.
