Government Expands Financial Aid for Higher Education and Research

The government of India wants to help students pay for college and research.

It gives money, called scholarships, to students who need help studying.

A minister named Sukanta Majumdar told lawmakers in the Rajya Sabha about these plans.

One programme, the National Scholarship for Post Graduate Studies, gives selected students Rs 15,000 every month for two years.

Another programme helps single girl children who want to do research.

It is called the Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship, and it replaced an older fellowship named after Swami Vivekananda.

Students get the money directly in their bank accounts, a system called Direct Benefit Transfer.

In the year 2025-26, the government is giving about 1.09 crore scholarships.

Many of these go to students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other social groups.

The goal is to make sure students from all backgrounds have a chance to keep studying.
