49 Lakh Delhi Electors Likely Absent, Shifted, Dead or Duplicate
Delhi is checking its list of people who are allowed to vote to make sure it is correct.
Workers called booth level officers went from house to house to see who still lives at their registered address.
They are looking for people who have moved away, who are not there anymore, who have passed away, or who are on the list more than once.
Officials think about 49 lakh out of 1.45 crore voters — roughly one in every three — may fall into these groups.
That is a lot of people, so officials are double-checking everything.
The door-to-door checking started on June 30 and will end on August 17.
A draft list of voters will be published on August 24 so everyone can look at it.
People will be able to point out mistakes on the list until September 23.
The final voting list is planned to be ready on October 27.
This process helps make sure the voters' list is clean before elections.
Around 49 lakh of Delhi's 1.45 crore electors — nearly 34 per cent — will likely fall under the absent, shifted, dead and duplicate (ASDD) categories in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a senior poll official said.
The SIR house-to-house enumeration exercise began on June 30 and ends on August 17, when the final ASDD numbers will be available at 5 pm.
A Delhi CEO office report issued on August 13 showed 96,61,655 enumeration forms, or 66.58 per cent of Delhi's 1,45,10,298 electors, had been digitised.
The largest component among those in the ASDD categories is expected to be people who permanently shifted or were absent from the address where the enumeration form was delivered.
The draft electoral roll will be published on August 24, claims and objections can be filed until September 23, and the final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on October 27.
