Delhi’s MPD-2047 Targets 22 Drains in Yamuna Revival
Delhi has made a long-term plan to help clean and restore the Yamuna River.
The plan says all 22 major drains flowing into the river should be intercepted and treated.
Sewage treatment, wetlands and natural cleaning methods would be used.
Thirteen projects would restore about 1,700 hectares of floodplain.
Wetlands would help collect floodwater and recharge groundwater.
Forests, grasslands and riverbank plants would provide homes for animals and protect the river.
Building would not be allowed in the active floodplain, except for approved essential facilities.
The plan also suggests walking and cycling paths near the river.
Cameras and other monitoring would be used to prevent dumping and regulate activities at river ghats.
The proposed MPD-2047 would intercept and treat all 22 drains discharging into the Yamuna.
Treatment would use sewage treatment plants, constructed wetlands and bioremediation, while banning untreated waste discharges.
Thirteen ecological restoration projects would cover about 1,700 hectares of Yamuna floodplains.
The active floodplain would become a no-construction zone, with limited recreation and approved infrastructure allowed.
A 200-kilometre Ridge-Yamuna cycling network, including a 52-kilometre floodplain stretch, is proposed.
