Uttarakhand CEO directs home hearings for elderly, differently-abled voters
In the Indian state of Uttarakhand, elections are run by a Chief Electoral Officer.
That officer, B V R C Purushottam, has given new instructions to local election officers.
He wants hearings about voter list problems to be held at the homes of senior citizens aged 65 and above and people with disabilities.
This way, these voters do not have to travel to polling booths or hearing centres.
The hearings deal with notices that were sent to voters after a draft electoral roll was published on July 14.
About 19 lakh notices, nearly 77 per cent of the total, have already been delivered.
Hearings are now happening in all districts and will continue until September 3.
The officers in charge of the Kumaon and Garhwal divisions have also been asked to check how the work is going.
Uttarakhand Chief Electoral Officer B V R C Purushottam directed district election officers to conduct SIR hearings at the homes of senior citizens aged 65 and above and differently-abled voters.
The directions were issued during a video conference with divisional commissioners and district magistrates of the Kumaon and Garhwal divisions to review the SIR exercise.
Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat and Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swarup were asked to undertake 'super-checking' visits in districts under their divisions.
Around 19 lakh notices, about 77 per cent of the total, have been served on voters following publication of the draft electoral roll on July 14 due to discrepancies and mapping-related issues.
Hearings on the notices are underway in all districts and will continue till September 3.
The move aims to ensure elderly and differently-abled voters do not have to visit polling booths or hearing centres unnecessarily.
