In India, many families cook using gas stored in metal cylinders called LPG, and these cylinders have a set price in each city.

On August 11, a 14.2-kg household cylinder cost ₹942 in Delhi, while the same cylinder cost the most in Hyderabad at ₹994.

Restaurants and hotels use bigger 19-kg cylinders, and those became ₹192 cheaper earlier this month.

The government decides these prices and promises to pay fuel companies the money they lose when gas is sold cheaply.

A minister said companies now lose about ₹188 on each household cylinder in August, much less than the ₹500 loss in July.

The government recently paid ₹30,000 crore to the companies but still owes them more than ₹59,000 crore.

Cars that run on CNG and homes that use piped natural gas (PNG) also have fixed prices, which differ from city to city.

People have been using less LPG since fighting began in West Asia, an area where important gas shipping routes pass.
