Modi inaugurates final sections, completing India’s dedicated freight network
India has finished building its main dedicated freight railway network.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the last three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
These sections connect the railway to Jawaharlal Nehru Port and other important industrial areas.
The Western and Eastern corridors together stretch for 2,843 kilometres.
Officials say the network should help cargo move faster and reduce pressure on Mumbai’s railway lines.
They also expect it to lower the cost of transporting goods.
By August, the operating sections had carried about 5.2 lakh freight train trips.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also said work on India’s Bullet Train project is progressing.
