India Keeps New LPG Connections Suspended Amid Supply Tensions
India has temporarily stopped giving people new home cooking-gas connections.
This started in March 2026 because tensions in the Middle East could affect gas supplies.
Companies are giving priority to people who already have LPG connections so they can refill their cylinders.
India has been buying more LPG from the United States to help maintain supplies.
The government is also checking customer identities through a process called e-KYC.
It is removing duplicate or fake connections from its records.
The website for new connections will reopen after this checking is finished.
Officials have not said exactly when that will happen.
The prices of domestic LPG cylinders have not changed.
Oil marketing companies have suspended new domestic LPG connections since March 2026.
The government says the temporary restriction is linked to geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions.
India imported a record 8.9 lakh tonnes of LPG from the United States in July and 6.2 lakh tonnes in August.
Distributors are prioritising refills for existing customers while authorities conduct compulsory e-KYC checks and remove duplicate connections.
The new-booking portal may reopen in a few months, but no date has been announced; domestic LPG prices remain unchanged.
