India's AI MedTech report flags three barriers to scale
Doctors and scientists in India want to use smart computer programs, called AI, to help take care of patients.
They want to put AI inside the medical machines that doctors use.
A big report says India has a great chance to do this.
It says India is very good at computer software and building digital tools.
But three big problems are slowing things down.
First, health information is scattered and hard to combine.
Second, the rules for AI keep changing and are not clear.
Third, hospitals are not always paid for using new AI tools.
The report says fixing these problems could make AI a big part of healthcare in India and help the country become a world leader.
Union Health Minister J P Nadda released the paper 'AI in MedTech: Revolutionising Healthcare Through Artificial Intelligence' at the ninth edition of India Medical Device 2026 in New Delhi.
The report, jointly developed by Praxis Global Alliance and FICCI, calls MedTech India's 'most immediate and scalable opportunity' for AI adoption.
Three barriers block wider clinical deployment: fragmented health data and limited evidence, evolving regulation, and inadequate reimbursement and procurement mechanisms.
AI-enabled diagnostics are expected to be the first major application at scale, the report said.
India's existing foundations include the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, IndiaAI Mission, and the National Medical Devices Policy, 2023.
