India's High-Value Crop Shift Boosts Demand for Organised Price Discovery
India is growing more valuable crops like spices and oilseeds.
A new report from an exchange called MCX says this is happening a lot.
Spices production has almost doubled in the last ten years.
Oilseeds have also grown very quickly.
Because there is much more of these crops, farmers and traders want better places to buy and sell them.
They also want ways to protect themselves when prices change.
The report explains that special markets called derivatives can help with this.
Right now, only a small number of farm products have these markets in India.
The report says India should improve warehouses and market rules to help these markets grow.
This could help farmers get better prices and manage their risks.
A report from MCX says India's shift toward higher-value crops such as spices and oilseeds is boosting demand for organised price discovery and risk management.
Spices recorded the strongest production growth, rising 85.9% from 6.99 million metric tonnes in 2015-16 to 12.99 MMT in 2024-25.
Spice production is projected to reach 18.12 MMT by 2029-30, growing at a forecast CAGR of 6.87%.
Oilseeds expanded from 25.25 MMT in 2015-16 to 42.99 MMT in 2024-25, a cumulative growth of 70.2%, led by rapeseed and mustard which rose 86.4%.
Only about 9% of the 117 major agricultural commodities identified by the Ministry of Agriculture currently have active exchange-traded derivative contracts.
