Inscription Reveals 1509 Origins of Tadipatri Temple’s Expansion
A historian says he has decoded an old inscription connected to a temple in Tadipatri.
The inscription says important parts of the Sri Bugga Ramalingeswara Temple were built in 1509.
These parts included outer walls, tall entrance towers and a wedding hall.
It says Prime Minister Saluva Timmarusu began the construction.
The Archaeological Survey of India recorded the inscription in 1923, but it had not been fully understood.
The inscription also says a village was renamed Veera Narasimhapuram.
Money from that village was given to support temple ceremonies.
The discovery helps historians learn more about the Vijayanagara Empire and the early Tuluva dynasty.
Historian MyNaa Swamy says Veera Narasimha Raya commissioned the temple’s outer walls, entrance towers and wedding hall.
A Telugu-Sanskrit inscription dates the construction work to May 4, 1509.
The Archaeological Survey of India documented the inscription in 1923 but it had not been fully deciphered.
The inscription says Prime Minister Saluva Timmarusu initiated construction of the bhoga mandapam, prakaram and gopurams.
Veera Narasimha Raya renamed a village Veera Narasimhapuram and assigned its revenue to the temple’s rituals.
