India’s Green Grid and Battery Scheme Wins UN Backing
India has approved a large plan to improve its electricity grid.
The plan is called Green Energy Corridor Phase-III.
It will help move electricity from renewable sources such as solar power.
The system is designed to handle up to 135 gigawatts of renewable energy.
It will also include batteries that can store up to 50 gigawatt-hours of electricity.
These batteries can help keep the grid steady when renewable power changes.
UN climate chief Simon Stiell said the plan could help India’s people and economy.
He also said it could create jobs in construction, manufacturing, and energy storage.
The project will receive financial support from the central government.
Green Energy Corridor Phase-III will build intra-state transmission infrastructure to evacuate 135 GW of renewable energy.
The scheme includes 50 GWh of battery energy storage to improve grid stability and address renewable-energy curtailment.
The project has a total outlay of Rs 1.86 lakh crore, including Rs 1.36 lakh crore for transmission systems.
The Centre will provide Rs 54,082 crore in financial assistance to help reduce intra-state transmission charges.
UN climate chief Simon Stiell said the scheme could support energy security, economic growth, and jobs in India.
