Ladakh Ponds Filled With Glacier Meltwater in Five Months
Officials in Ladakh built four large ponds near Leh.
The project is called Him Sarovar.
Work started on April 10 and finished on September 9.
The ponds were filled with water from melting glaciers.
Each pond can hold about 60 lakh litres of water.
Together, they can store nearly 2.4 crore litres.
The stored water may help irrigate almost 1,000 acres of land.
Officials said the project will also support nature restoration and long-term water security.
Four ponds under Project Him Sarovar at Spituk Farka in Leh were filled with glacier meltwater in five months.
Construction began on April 10 and concluded with the fourth pond’s recharge and operationalisation on September 9.
Each pond measures 60 metres by 40 metres by two metres and stores around 60 lakh litres.
Together, the ponds can hold nearly 2.4 crore litres and create an irrigation command area of nearly 1,000 acres.
Water from the Stok glacier stream was diverted through the Igoo-Phey Canal for irrigation, ecological restoration and water security.
