NASA to test 12 heat shields during cargo spacecraft’s re-entry

Heat shields protect spacecraft from the intense heat of entering an atmosphere.

NASA plans to release 12 test capsules during a cargo spacecraft’s planned return to Earth.

Sensors will record how different shield materials perform in real flight conditions.

The results could help engineers design heat shields for future missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond.
