Testosterone use for menopause symptoms draws interest, but evidence is limited

Some women are seeking testosterone gel to ease menopause symptoms, and some have reportedly posed as men to obtain it because products intended for women are not easy to find.

Women naturally make testosterone, although their blood levels are usually much lower than men’s.

The hormone’s levels decline over time, but unlike estrogen, they do not drop sharply at menopause.

Research supports carefully dosed testosterone for some postmenopausal women with persistently low sexual desire that causes distress.

International clinical guidelines recognize it for that condition, but there is not strong clinical-trial evidence for other uses in women.

Testosterone is not a replacement for standard menopause hormone therapy and is usually added to it when prescribed.

The available evidence therefore supports a limited use, while the broader effects of testosterone on women’s health remain uncertain.
