Eagles plan to keep Lane Johnson on roster after his retirement

The Philadelphia Eagles plan to keep Lane Johnson on their roster even though he has retired and is not expected to play.

Johnson, 36, was inactive for the team’s Week 5 game, and the Eagles expect him to remain inactive for their remaining 12 games.

He cited mental health as the main reason for retiring.

Keeping him on the roster allows Philadelphia to wait until after June 1 next year to process his departure.

That timing would let the team divide his $42.89 million salary-cap charge between 2027 and 2028.

The plan means the Eagles will effectively have 52 available roster spots this season, making their weekly call-ups from the practice squad more important.

Johnson could technically return later in the season, but that is not expected.
