Indonesian deputy minister says consumer spending remains strong
Indonesia’s Deputy Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Dradjad Hari Wibowo, said purchasing power remains strong.
He pointed to statistics showing that household consumption grew by more than 5% in the first half of 2026.
The country’s statistics agency also recorded growth of more than 6% in transport, restaurants and hotels.
Dradjad said people are spending more on travel and other lifestyle choices, while digital transactions have also risen sharply.
He cited QRIS payment transactions, which he said increased by more than 100%.
The government’s explanation is that spending patterns are changing, rather than consumers losing the ability to buy.
The figures and comments were presented at a press conference at the statistics agency’s office in Jakarta on October 12.

What is happening is not weakening purchasing power, but a very significant shift in people’s consumption patterns.
