Yemen’s government says it carried out nine air strikes in Taiz
Forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognised government carried out nine air strikes on Houthi positions and military equipment in Taiz governorate, southwest Yemen, on Tuesday.
Five strikes were reported in Dhubab district and four in al-Masrakh district, while fighting continued south of Taiz.
The strikes come amid renewed fighting between the government and the Houthis, an armed group that seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.
A Yemeni rights organisation accused the Houthis of killing at least five civilians and injuring 17 in the previous 24 hours, including a five-year-old girl.
It also said the Houthis shelled residential areas, damaging at least seven homes, and fired more than 180 projectiles across Taiz; these claims were attributed to the organisation.
The violence is part of a broader escalation, with the United Nations saying at least 46 civilians have been killed since August and more than 200,000 people displaced since September.
The sources give no specific next step following Tuesday’s strikes, while the International Committee of the Red Cross has called for all parties to de-escalate.
