Riyadh airport hit again as Houthis warn airlines to avoid Saudi airspace

A projectile struck a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday and started a fire.

Saudi authorities said people were injured, but did not give a number.

Air defences also intercepted a missile near the airport, which remained closed after Saturday’s attack.

Reports give different death tolls for Saturday’s strike: at least 12 or 13 people were killed, and more than 300 were injured.

Yemen’s Houthi group claimed attacks on the airport and warned airlines, workers and travellers against using Saudi airports and airspace, while excluding those in Mecca and Medina.

The group says it is targeting Saudi Arabia because Riyadh backs government forces in Yemen’s civil war; it also cited a strike on Sanaa airport.

The Houthis claimed attacks on other Saudi sites, but Saudi Arabia had not confirmed those claims.

Saudi authorities said they were assessing damage and checking that airport facilities were safe, while the shutdown was extended until 21:00 GMT.
