Unexploded munition kills teenager and injures 24 on hike in northern Israel

A 14-year-old boy was killed and 24 students and adults were injured in an explosion during a school hike in northern Israel.

The group was hiking near the border with Lebanon, in an area affected by fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

The Israeli military said the device was likely an unexploded cluster munition fired by Hezbollah.

Such weapons can spread over wide areas, and some do not explode when they land.

One student is believed to have picked up the device before it detonated.

The injuries included two teenagers in serious condition, and the group was taken to hospitals in northern Israel.

Israel’s police chief said authorities would review whether to stop school trips in the area.
