More MPS shareholders back Intesa Sanpaolo’s offer
Intesa Sanpaolo is seeking to take over Monte dei Paschi di Siena, known as MPS.
Enasarco, which holds about 1% of MPS, has indicated it will support Intesa’s offer, following major shareholders including Delfin, Caltagirone and Edizione.
Giorgio Girondi is also likely to support it, while the Tortora family’s holding company says it will decide at the shareholder meeting.
MPS chief executive Luigi Lovaglio is expected to lack the votes needed at the October 29 meeting to approve MPS offers for Banca Generali and Banco BPM.
He may seek approval to buy a 13.2% stake in Generali from Mediobanca, but the plan would face further review and valuation steps.
Investors are also watching Unicredit after its board discussed acquisitions, prompting speculation about Banca Generali.
Unicredit and Generali have already been discussing possible cooperation in areas such as insurance sales and wealth management, but no deal is confirmed.
Enasarco has signalled support for Intesa Sanpaolo’s offer for Monte dei Paschi di Siena (Mps).
The move adds to support from Delfin, the Caltagirone group and the Benetton family’s Edizione.
Giorgio Girondi is likely to align with the offer, while the Tortora family’s Plt holding has yet to decide.
Mps shareholders are due to meet on 29 October, when CEO Luigi Lovaglio is unlikely to secure approval for offers involving Banca Generali and Banco Bpm.
