PT senator proposes barring children under 13 from social media

Mexican Senator Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez of the Labor Party has proposed preventing children under 13 from creating or using social media accounts.

His proposal would require social media companies to verify users’ ages and protect the information collected for that purpose.

Anaya says young people may face cyberbullying and harmful content online while they are still learning to assess risks and protect their personal data.

He argues that removing a post or closing an account may not undo harm if private information has already been shared.

The proposal is not intended to block children from using the internet or benefiting from technology.

It would place the main responsibility on the companies, rather than punish children who use the platforms.

The proposal has been sent to Senate committees for consideration.
